Vasylechky

Choreographer Volodymyr Hlushenkov collected the folklore material for this and other Podillian dance productions in the village of Verbivtsi, Terebovlia District, Ternopil Region. His consultants were Hryhorii and Yevheniia Pavlyshyn, who pointed out the dances once performed by the villagers, shared their meaning and specific movements, and recalled colorful shouts and sayings such as "hop-sasa, kozhen svoiu potriasa" ("hop-sasa, everyone shakes their partner"), "polku podzhyhliuiem" ("let's spice up the polka"), and "polka-prosto" ("simple polka"). Thus, the choreography of the dance "Vasylechky" was created based on the discovered material, with its storyline depicting the celebration of one of the most cherished traditional winter holidays—St. Basil's Day, when everyone named Vasyl and Vasylyna gathered together to rejoice and make merry at traditional vechornytsi  (evening gatherings).
